The ability to provide immediate feedback makes technology ideal for drill and practice routines. However, these shallow educational opportunities are criticized for not providing learning experiences that are transferable to the real world.

That's not to say there isn't any merit in the behaviorist approach to educational technology. The basic elements of a personalized system of instruction could be used in conjunction with other technologies to provide a richer learning experience.

Constructivism

Cognitivism utilizes technology for richer more complex problem solving, collaboration, and message design. In this learning model technology moves from the static teacher directed applications into dynamic interactive applications, as shown in the chart below.



Students use "empty" technologies to create their own artifacts. Teachers and students utilize auditory, visual, and verbal processing in the message design to help students organize information so that it makes sense.
